Dogs from all over Kentucky are welcomed each year at the Prime K9 Mid Summer Splash in Winchester. Mouse, one of the participating dogs, is a Belgian Malinois who was ready to take water sports to a whole new height.

For Prime K9 Sports owners Emily and Jesse Smith, hosting the Mid Summer Splash is a way to keep all dogs active.

“My retired police dog was a Labrador and after we left the police department he had nothing to do except hang out on the farm. So we went to one of those events and he fell in love with it and so did we, ”said Emily Smith.

Dock diving is causing a stir in the world of dog sports. So this prompted the Smiths to register with the North America Diving Dogs. The organization that allows dogs to compete and recognized by the American Kennel Club for winning dives.

The Smiths opened their business two years ago – the Mid Summer Splash being one of five events they host each year with their three daughters.

“We organize events, organize training and have fun with our dogs. We’re a bunch of crazy dogs here, ”said Emily Smith.

In addition to dockside diving, dog owners can also bring their pets to participate in activities such as scavenging in which a toy is suspended four feet above the water.

“It’s like sitting on the edge of your seat every time they jump to see if they can reach out and grab it or not,” Jesse Smith said.

The off the beaten track farm is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Lexington. But that doesn’t stop homeowners from welcoming people and animals from across the state.

“In the small town of Winchester, Kentucky, they can do [dock diving] with their dog. What’s great about this facility or event, if your dog likes swimming or likes toys, they can probably dive at the dock, ”said Emily Smith.

The Smiths agree that opportunities like this are what keep them going.

“It means everything to us, we want our kids to have something to do and to be able to enjoy it. Spending time with the family, they all love to do it. This allows us to open our farm up to other people so they can share it with us, ”Jesse Smith.

The Smiths want to encourage people with any dog of any breed to participate in the Prime K9 Mid Summer Splash. Dogs that scored well today will earn a North American Diving Dog title. The best performing dogs will then move on to the next K9 competition in August, followed by a regional match.
